Meet the Fire Fighters

The Big Rapids Fire Division is made up of 9 full time and 18 paid-on-call fire fighters. All fire fighters are under the command of a Deputy Director.

The 9 full-time fire fighters are assigned to three 3 person shifts. All full time fire fighters are trained and certified as Medical First Responders. All off-duty and part-paid personnel are called in for reports of structure fire, while medical calls are generally handled by on-duty personnel.

The City of Big Rapids Fire Division covers the entire City, including Ferris State University, and provides coverage to Green Township in Mecosta County and Barton and Norwich Townships in Newaygo County on a contractual basis. The total area the Fire Division covers is over 115 square miles and includes substantial amounts of wildland and State and Federal forests.

The Fire Division is responsible for performing approximately 1,700 annual fire inspections of rental housing in the City. The goal of this program is fire prevention and safety.

Firefighters are responsible for the majority of day-to-day maintenance of apparatus and equipment and are also specially trained in testing ladders and hoses as well as performing service and repair of all Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA). The Division also provides most of these testing services to other area departments at nominal costs.
