The Information Technology Department was formed in 1993 with the arrival of Tim Moslener to the City's staff. This department is responsible for maintaining and updating computers, telephones and telecommunications equipment. This department is also responsible for maintaining and updating the various software utilized by every department within the City.
Other responsibilities of the Information Management Department:
In-house training
Computer purchases and upgrades.
Internet connectivity
Cable franchise negotiations and transfers
Network security
Telephone and network wiring
Voicemail and VOIP Systems
PC and server Installation, repair, maintenance and upgrades
Determining software and hardware needs for each department.
Connectivity between the City, Central Dispatch and Mecosta County for multi-user Police software systems
Day to day operations of the network systems
Coordination of technology purchases among various departments
Geographic Information Systems
Document Imaging and retention
Purchase of Copiers and Fax Machines
Cell tower leases
Web Page Design and Maintenance
Microsoft Windows XP is the standard for all computers in the City. Microsoft Office is the application suite that the City uses. Here's a list of specific software vendors for each
department:
Assessing - BS&A software.
This includes Assessing, tax administration, Personal Delinquent Property and
Special Assessment packages.
Clerk's Office - Qualified Voter Registration Program. A state funded
program with the ability to track voter information and store it in a
centralized database with the state.
Fire Department - Fire Programs.
This includes daily processing of runs, apparatus maintenance and provides the
Fire Department with the capability to submit reports to the state in NFIRS
format.
Income Tax - Innovative Software (formerly Courtland). This software
provides the Income Tax department with complete Income Tax Collection and
Administration functions.
Public Safety - Vision. This system allows for Ferris State University and the
City of Big Rapids to connect to a centralized database at Central
Dispatch. All fire and police activity is monitored by Central Dispatch
and entered into the system. Both fire and police divisions are able to
follow the incident on-line, adding transcription reports, victims, suspects,
etc.
Treasurer's Office - Eden Systems and BS & A. The City of Big
Rapids uses Eden systems, out of Yakima, WA, for all budgetary, financial,
inventory, purchasing and payroll functions. BS & A is the
supplier of the City's cash receipting stations and Utility Billing Software.
