School Liaison

The School Liaison program began in 1999 in an effort to improve school security and foster better Police-student relations. The program places a police officer in the school system, building a rapport and a bridge between the student body and Police. The School Liaison Officer also does a variety of presentations at the schools on issues such as domestic violence, alcohol abuse, gun safety, and life skills decision-making.

The Officer is provided office space in the Big Rapids Middle School. The Officer divides his or her time between the Middle School and four public elementary schools, along with St. Mary’s Catholic School, and Crossroads Charter Academy.

The School Liaison Program is a jointly funded program supported by Big Rapids Department of Public Safety and contributions from the schools involved.
