Police Service Officer Program
The Service Officer program was started in 1994 using students from the Ferris State University work study program. Service Officers are Criminal Justice Majors eligible for Federal financial aid who are looking for experience in their career field. The work study program is in lieu of student loans with the Department responsible for approximately 10% of the student's wages. The Department utilizes Service Officers in both Divisions.
Service officers’ duties include parking enforcement, desk duties, supervision of community corrections crews, traffic control, security at special functions, role players for department training, responding to non-emergency complaints, station duties in the Fire Division, and other department functions as assigned.
