Owner Occupied Housing Rehabilitation Program Guidelines

The City of Big Rapids Owner Occupied Rehabilitation Program will provide small reimbursement grants to low income homeowners. The program will operate as follows:

  1. The homeowner submits an application, photograph of the structure, photograph of the area to be repaired, and a completed self-declaration of income form to the Department of Neighborhood Services.
  2. Eligible applications will be approved and the homeowner will be instructed to begin the necessary repairs. Once the repairs are completed, the homeowner will give the Department of Neighborhood Services receipts along with a photograph of the completed work.
  3. The City of Big Rapids rebates the work by giving a maximum grant of $500 to low income homeowners (See Section 8 Income Chart)
  4. A site inspection, by City Staff, may be required to verify the completion of repairs prior to the disbursement of funds.
  5. Applicants are responsible for providing all structure photographs.
  6. Only repairs required by the 1996 BOCA National Property Maintenance Code will be eligible for rebates. Some examples of eligible repairs are described on the application form.
  7. City grants will only be provided for exterior structure repairs. No interior repairs will be funded by the grants.

Please note that the City of Big Rapids will only be reimbursing grant money to residential owner occupied dwelling units. No owner occupied rental units or rental units will be considered for grant reimbursements.

Please be aware that the City of Big Rapids accepts no liability and does not warranty any work completed for the property owners receiving grant funds.
